FED: National Gallery the big winner in federation grants

CANBERRA, Aug 20 AAP - The Australian National Gallery was the big winner in the latest
round of Centenary of Federation funding grants announced today.

The gallery received $500,000 from the National Council for the Centenary of Federation
(NCCF) to mount a centenary year exhibition of 100 Aboriginal and non-indiginous works
reflecting Australian visual art over a century.

The money formed part of $4 million worth of grants made available by the council under its
$10 million history and education program.

The program was designed to increase knowledge and appreciation of Australia's development
since Federation in 1901.

Other successful grant applicants included the Australian Maritime Museum in Sydney and the
Pitjantjatjara Council, which will produce a $197,000 multimedia tribal history for the South
Australian Museum.

The Australian Labor Party, which was formed one day prior to the opening of the first
federal parliament on May 9, 1901, received a grant to write its centenary history.

The new round of funding brings to $8 million the total amount distributed by the NCCF.

A third round of funding will be announced in newspaper advertisements tomorrow with
applications closing on September 24.
