VIC:Phar Lap moved to new Melbourne Museum site

The preserved body of Australian sporting icon PHAR LAP has been moved from display
at the National Gallery to the Melbourne Museum's new Carlton Gardens site.

A large window had to be taken out of the 19th century building to enable a team of
20 museum workers and contractors to lift the two-tonne crate carrying the great race
horse on to a flat-back truck.

The move was conducted under the cover of darkness for operational and security reasons
and to protect the exhibit from the sun.

Phar Lap's body was on display at the Melbourne Museum -- formerly the Victorian Museum
-- for 64 years, before being placed in storage three years ago as the museum prepared
to move sites.

The preserved body was donated to Museum Victoria by its owner DAVID DAVIS after the
horse's mysterious poisoning death in the United States in 1933.
