Fed: PM draws line at formal apology =2

Australian of the Year Sir Gustav Nossal, the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation's
deputy chairman, said an apology to Aborigines was crucial to the success of reconciliation.

But he conceded Mr Howard was not the prime minister who would deliver it.

"Knowing the prime minister, I think he went as far as it is possible for him to go
knowing the person that he is," Sir Gustav told an audience of foreign journalists in
Sydney.
